The Krekengebied Ouwerkerk is a beautiful nature area spanning 140 hectares, created after the dike breach in 1953. Managed by Staatsbosbeheer, the area is rich in flora and fauna. The forest features oaks, poplars, and beeches, where various songbirds such as the willow warbler and chiffchaff breed. It’s an excellent spot for observing special birds, including kingfishers, woodpeckers, and even the fast-diving peregrine falcon in winter.

The lowland between the sea dike and the large creek is ideal for coastal birds and salt-loving plants like glasswort. There are walking, cycling, and horseback riding routes leading to Ouwerkerk’s beach, where swimming, fishing with a permit, and canoeing are allowed, making it a fantastic destination for families.

Visitors can explore several walking routes, including a 2.5 km and an 8 km loop that passes by the Watersnoodmuseum. The museum tells the story of the disaster and features a special route for children. After your visit, enjoy local dishes at the brasserie “Het Vijfde Caisson,” where you can also order picnic baskets.
