The forests of Schuddebeurs, located above Zierikzee, may not be large, but they offer a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Dominated by oak, beech, hawthorn, and coniferous trees, the area is home to animals such as woodpeckers, owls, songbirds, frogs, and deer. In spring, snowdrops and wood anemones bloom, enhancing the area’s beauty. The region has a rich history; during the Golden Age, beautiful villas like Mon Plaisir and Weelzicht were built, which still adorn the landscape today.
Staatsbosbeheer manages the forests around Mon Plaisir and the Kakkersweel, a water body formed after a dike breach. This nature reserve provides breeding grounds for various bird species and is freely accessible to walkers and riders. At Mon Plaisir, the “Forest of the Future” was planted, allowing people to plant trees in memory of special occasions. This not only makes the area a natural gem but also a place where humans and nature coexist harmoniously.
