The Slikken van Bommenede is a stunning nature reserve located on Schouwen-Duiveland, known for its rich bird population, including over 400 breeding species. This 90-hectare area is home to both threatened and rare species, such as the marsh harrier and the Arctic tern.
The flora includes sea buckthorn, willows, and various plants adapted to the salty conditions, like samphire and saltmarsh flora. In the higher areas, you’ll find plants like parnassia and marsh orchid, enhancing biodiversity.
A notable feature of this area is the island that offers protection against predators like rats and foxes, making it a safe breeding ground for vulnerable birds such as the little tern and the avocet. To prevent overgrowth, cows graze in the summer, but Staatsbosbeheer also regularly mows and prunes.
Unfortunately, the nature reserve is not accessible to the public, but you can enjoy views from the Zonnemairsedijk and the road along the harbor. The Slikken van Bommenede is a crucial part of the Grevelingen ecosystem, serving as a true bird nursery, ideal for raising young birds.
